Eric Liu on Citizenship & Civic Culture: Democracy at the Local Level

In December 2022, the American Academy of Arts & Sciences hosted “Reinventing Democracy: How Hometowns Are Strengthening America” with a focus on replicable and important initiatives taking place in cities and towns. Local leaders and experts convened for panels and discussions highlighting recommendations in the Academy’s bipartisan report, Our Common Purpose: Reinventing Democracy for the 21st Century. Eric is the co-founder and CEO of Citizen University, which works to build a culture of powerful and responsible citizenship in the United States. Eric is a member of the American Academy of Arts and Sciences, and he serves as a Co-Chair of the Commission on the Practice of Democratic Citizenship which produced the Our Common Purpose report. In this keynote address, Eric discusses why local leadership is important to building a strong civic culture and resilient American democracy.
