Museum Beelden aan Zee (Sculptures by the Sea Museum) in the Scheveningen district of The Hague, is the only Dutch museum that focuses exclusively on contemporary international sculpture. Its founders, Theo and Lida Scholten, started collecting in the late sixties and devoted a large part of their lives to acquiring rare works of art. They laid the foundation for the current collection of the museum, which opened in 1994. Situated just off the promenade of Scheveningen, many of the museum's terraces and presentation rooms overlook the North Sea. Tucked in the dunes, the museum provides for a serene experience. The exhibition in the video, from 19-06-2021 to 21-04-2022, features the sculptures of Igor Mitoraj (1944-2014). He was a Polish artist and sculptor known for his fragmented sculptures of the human body often created for large-scale public installations. In the museum's Gipsoteca by the Sea' thousand unique plaster models provide insight into the development of modern sculpture in the Netherlands. Museum Beelden aan Zee was designed by Dutch architect Wim Quist. The building sits below the historic Von Wied Pavilion (1827), bunkered down in the dunes (the municipality of The Hague required that the museum not be visible from the dunes). It has the basic shape of two large circles. All materials used - concrete, Italian granite, beech wood and American pine - have been selected for their sand color that merges with its surroundings. Since 2004, the museum building also houses the Sculptuur Instituut ("Sculpture Institute"), a research institute on contemporary sculpture. The institute library is accessible during museum opening hours. A public sculpture garden created out of numerous sculptures by the American sculptor Tom Otterness is located on the boulevard just beyond the museum. ________________ Why was the museum built under the Von Wied Pavilion? In the eighties of the twentieth century, the operating costs of the pavilion had risen sharply. The owner, Littéraire Sociëteit De Witte, therefore looked for other sources of income. On September 17, 1990, the general members' meeting of Sociëteit de Witte approved a plan for a sculpture museum in the building. This way the building could be refurbished and made future-proof again. Until 2091, the museum also pays an annual ground lease to the society. Today the Von Wied Pavilion is used by the members in the summer months and also is rented out as a party and meeting center. ________________ https://www.beeldenaanzee.nl/en/ March 16, 2022 My first 4K YouTube-video, filmed with the Panasonic HC-VX1 and DJI Osmo Action (walking shots).
