Response Spectrum Analysis and Seismic Design of Conventional Bridges For the month of March we have organized a series of free online seminars on bridge design and analysis. The first two seminar series will provide engineers with a comprehensive understanding of how to approach seismic analysis for both high-end and conventional bridge types. The third seminar series will provide instruction on how to overcome challenges that are unique to curved steel I-girder design and construction. Each series will include guest speakers from Michael Baker and Parsons Brinckerhoff who will share their expertise of working on such projects. This is an excellent opportunity to learn firsthand from leading professionals about the latest innovations in bridge design technology. COURSE 2 IN-DEPTH CASE STUDY & DISCUSSION Our senior bridge engineer, Nithil Malguri, will lead a detailed discussion on the following design topics: DEMAND CALCULATION The provisions of the AASHTO LRFD Seismic Design Code will be followed to calculate the seismic demand for a conventional bridge project. A step by step discussion will be done on various aspects of the code to perform the Elastic Dynamic analysis. Various modifications to the demand calculations like consideration of bridge foundation support and P Delta effects will be discussed. CAPACITY CALCULATION The provisions of the AASHTO LRFD Seismic Design Code will be followed to calculate the capacity of the aforementioned bridge. The capacity will be calculated by conducting the Pushover Analysis on the bridge. Steps involved in the Pushover analysis and code considerations will be discussed in the process. NEW DEVELOPMENTS IN SEISMIC ANALYSIS The New Seismic Analysis methods which are becoming popular among engineers will be discussed. These methods will be helpful to understand the proper analysis technique for seismic evaluation for a specific type of bridge. 03/22/2013
