Professor Kenneth Amaechi Agu’s inaugural lecture highlights the wide-ranging nature of General Surgery and the diverse research areas he has explored within it. The lecture presents his key studies on informed consent, typhoid intestinal perforation, thyroid surgery, and seatbelt use among drivers, revealing how surgical science intersects with ethics, public health, and social behaviour. It emphasises respect for patient autonomy, prevention through hygiene and safe water, evidence-based screening before surgery, and the importance of education over enforcement in road safety. Professor Agu also proposes two bold hypotheses—on the adaptive role of sweat glands and on extending foetal haemoglobin production in sickle cell patients—demonstrating his curiosity beyond traditional surgical frontiers. This lecture is both an academic reflection and a call to bridge persistent gaps in knowledge, practice, and human wellbeing. About the Lecturer Born on September 7, 1965, Professor Kenneth Amaechi Agu obtained his MBBS from the University of Nigeria, Nsukka, in 1988. After his housemanship and national service, he trained in Surgery at the University of Nigeria Teaching Hospital, Enugu, where he earned his fellowship in 2001, passing all examinations on his first attempt. He joined the University of Nigeria as a Lecturer in 2002, was promoted to Senior Lecturer in 2008, and became a Professor of Surgery in 2017. With over 30 scientific publications and conference presentations across Nigeria and abroad, Professor Agu has also undergone advanced surgical training at the University of Tübingen, Germany (2008) and University College London Hospital, UK (2011).
