In Lessons from “The Unboiling of an Egg”: The Nostalgic Reminiscences, Professor Ferdinand C. Chilaka delivers a deeply reflective valedictory lecture that weaves rigorous biochemical science with memory, ethics, and institutional critique. Drawing from decades of scholarship in enzymology, protein folding, and biotechnology, especially studies of life extension and human immortality, he employs the powerful metaphor of “unboiling an egg” to explore reversibility, renewal, and the conditions required for meaningful restoration—whether in proteins, human consciousness, or universities. Through nostalgic recollections of childhood, student life, academic mentorship, and university governance, the lecture interrogates Nigeria’s educational decline, leadership failures, and research neglect. Prof. Chilaka challenges the academic community to “reset” by returning to foundational values of integrity, discipline, and intellectual abundance. At once scientific, philosophical, and moral, the lecture offers hard truths, personal wisdom, and a compelling call for collective responsibility in refolding the University of Nigeria—and the nation—towards a more purposeful future. About the Lecturer Born on 30th January 1956, Professor Ferdinand Chiemeka Chilaka is a distinguished Professor of Enzymology and Protein Chemistry in the Department of Biochemistry at the University of Nigeria, Nsukka, where his academic career has spanned over four decades. He obtained his B.Sc. (1979), M.Sc. (1983), and PhD (1986) from UNN and was promoted to Professor in 2006. Prof. Chilaka has held several key administrative and leadership positions, including Dean of the Faculty of Biological Sciences, Head of the Department of Biochemistry, President of the UNN Senior Staff Club, and Member of the University Governing Council. His research spans enzymology, protein chemistry, computational chemistry, biotechnology, and regenerative medicine, with international training and collaborations in Italy, Iran, and the United Kingdom. A Fellow of the Nigerian Society of Biochemistry and Molecular Biology, he has over 80 scholarly publications and two books, and remains a passionate advocate for scientific advancement, institutional development, and mentorship within the Nigerian university system.
