The Gospel of John begins speaking in high and transcendent terms about the pre-existent Word of God, who is light and life to all men. Then in John 1:6, it makes this mundane statement: "There came a man who was sent from God; his name was John." Why the sudden shift from the creator and sustainer God to a guy named John? It was because God was about to do something extraordinary. He was about to position himself not in heavenly, ethereal realms, but in a specific time and place with ordinary people like you and me, or a guy named John. In the incarnation, God took on flesh and became a man. He was born into a family, given a common name, and grew up in a miserable little town. Suddenly, the God who made the universe was known as Mary's son, a boy named Jesus, and a lowly Nazarene. It was all unexpected and undetected by everyone except a few wise men and a man named John. While the wise men were instructed not to reveal Jesus as the newborn king, John the Baptist was sent by God to announce to the world that Jesus was the Messiah (or Anointed One) and had come to save mankind. God had become flesh in a crumby town as a common boy in an unknown family to redeem humanity by living a perfect life under the humblest circumstances, and his herald was just as common as he was. He was just a guy named John, but he located God in human history and pointed us all his way. The incarnation was extraordinary, because it was "extra"-ordinary. God became one of us, and John was there to prepare the way for the Life of Christ. This is another episode in the series entitled, "The Life of Christ." Join father and son, Timothy and Caleb, while they explore the life of the most talked about person in human history, Jesus Christ.
