(on Real Time Trans) Crossing type: Manually Controlled Barrier crossing with CCTV (MCB-CCTV) Filming location: Factory Lane, Warrington (WA5 1AH) Foot Access via public footpath from Quay Fold by Littons Mill crossing A rather peculiar and very under-rated level crossing found just outside of the centre of Warrington, near Bank Quay station, in the north of Cheshire between Manchester and Liverpool. This level crossing is located on a freight-only line whose usage is not consistent, and whose main users are light locomotives heading between the Ditton / Halewood area and Arpley Sidings just across the West Coast Main Line. In these videos filmed about 12 hours apart, an ad-hoc weed-killing train and one of those said light locomotives can be seen both heading towards Fiddler's Ferry, with the activation for the latter very sudden as train's report came after the activation. This was a highly sought-after crossing for me to visit and catch in action for these trains, and was the catch of 2025 for me! This level crossing is located right in the middle of a live chemical works, and would otherwise be completely inaccessible to the public. However, a public footpath exists which connects Quay Fold and the banks of the River Mersey next to the historic Transporter Bridge, and rather uniquely runs right through the factory itself. Walkers are instructed to follow a green line which marks out its route (as reminded by an automated announcement over a tannoy when entering/exiting from Quay Fold), and there is a lot of monitoring to ensure people don't deviate from it, as that would count as trespassing and in high-risk areas. This footpath runs right past this crossing, and because of the lack of room in the area and how close parallel it runs to the railway, the only necessary evil is to have walkers wait at the barriers for trains to pass even if the authorised public route does not cross the tracks at all. The far side of the crossing is away from the footpath, and I didn't want to risk crossing over. In its current form, the crossing dates back to circa. 2012, and is now controlled nearby from Monks Sidings. Because of the lack of space mentioned, the barriers on one side are set-up almost in a triangular manner, and lower together with the other side's near-side barrier, leaving you with three barriers dropping at the same time, followed by a lone off-side barrier just after - quite unique for a crossing! The crossing has three alarms: one beside the back-to-back wigwags, another above the crossing's sole pedestrian signal, and the third across the tracks next to the old signal box.
