About the talk: Background Story Statefulsets are the most commonly used primitive to deploy a stateful system like CockroachDB on Kubernetes. While Statefulsets provide a very fast way of getting started, we’ve discovered many pain points mentioned below. As a result, a great deal of custom code had to be written internally to mitigate the issues observed when running databases on Kubernetes. This led us to build an operator[https://github.com/cockroachdb/cockro...] that implements its own pod replication controller. Issues to be discussed in the presentation: * Ordinal based ordering[https://kubernetes.io/docs/concepts/w...] and how system instability can be introduced when restarting pods and nodes. Ordinal reuse and the risks of running certain types of distributed systems on Kubernetes, such as databases. * Rolling restarts and Pod Disruption Budgets[https://kubernetes.io/docs/concepts/w...]. * Homogeneity enforcement across managed pods. * Immutable fields in the Statefulsets. * A more detailed technical description of a custom-made operator. About Babu: BabuSrithar - India Site Lead & Senior Director of Engineering, Cockroach Labs. Srithar is part of Cockroach Labs (the company behind CockroachDB[https://github.com/cockroachdb], the open source, distributed SQL database) and leading its expansion to India as a Strategic Engineering Excellence center. Prior to Cockroach Labs, Srithar played technical leadership roles at cloud and infrastructure companies like Clumio, Nutanix, and more. I joined the KCD Bangalore chapter recently, and I look forward to participating, helping build the community, and hosting events in Bangalore.
