Lippard examines the use of documentary photography of Native Americans as a form of cultural warfare and as a means by which American colonial hegemony was extended. There is a discussion of the collections of photos contained in "Partial Recall," touching on the issue of Native appropriation, use of images as a vehicle for self-representation, and the possibility of fresh interpretation of stereotypic images. Lucy Lippard, writer and activitist, is author of 20 books on contemporary art and cultural criticism, including, "The Lure of the Local: Senses of Place in a Multicentered Society and Mixed Blessings." She edited the critically acclaimed, “Partial Recall,” a collection of essays dealing with American Indian photography. Cofounder of Printed Matter, the Heresies Collective, Political Art Documentation/Distribution, Artists Call Against U.S. Intervention in Central America, and other artists' organizations, she has also curated over 50 exhibitions, done performances, comics, guerilla theater, and edited several independent publications. She holds a MA from New York University Institute of Art and numerous honorary doctorates. Among many awards, she received a Guggenheim Fellowship.
