In this presentation, Dr. James Faris examines and analyzes what he called "photographs of colonial creation," primarily through an examination of the Navajo photography of Edward Curtis. Ultimately, Faris raises some serious questions concerning the nature of ownership of such images and the issue of Native peoples' right to privacy and control over their own images. James C. Faris, emeritus professor of anthropology at the University of Connecticut, has done extensive research on the photography of the Navajo and on ethical issues in anthropology and photography. He is author of "The Nightway: A History and a History of Documentation of a Navajo Ceremonial" and "Navajo and Photography: A Critical History of the Representation of an American People."
