Uterine Rupture & HIE: A Dangerous Birth Emergency Uterine rupture is one of the most serious emergencies that can occur during labor and delivery. When the uterus tears, both the mother and baby can face life-threatening complications. In this video, I explain what uterine rupture is and why immediate medical intervention is critical to prevent brain injury. What Is Uterine Rupture? Uterine rupture occurs when the wall of the uterus tears during pregnancy or labor. When this happens, the baby may partially or completely move into the mother’s abdominal cavity. Depending on the size of the rupture: • A baby’s arm or leg may extend through the tear • The baby’s head may move outside the uterus • In severe cases, the entire baby may enter the abdominal cavity When this occurs, the placenta — which delivers oxygen and nutrients from mother to baby — may become compromised. Why Uterine Rupture Is So Dangerous The placenta is the baby’s lifeline. If it becomes detached or compromised during a uterine rupture, the baby can quickly suffer oxygen deprivation. Without oxygen, brain tissue begins to suffer damage. This can lead to a condition known as: Hypoxic Ischemic Encephalopathy (HIE) HIE occurs when the brain does not receive enough oxygen and blood flow. It can lead to: • Brain damage • Seizures • Cerebral palsy • Developmental delays • Lifelong neurological impairments Emergency Delivery Is Critical A uterine rupture is a true obstetrical emergency. In most cases, the baby must be delivered immediately by emergency C-section. Any delay in recognizing the rupture or performing the C-section can significantly increase the risk of oxygen deprivation and brain injury. If your child: • Was delivered after a uterine rupture • Required an emergency C-section • Had low Apgar scores • Was diagnosed with HIE or cerebral palsy • Required NICU care after birth …it may be important to understand whether proper medical care was provided. I focus exclusively on birth injury cases involving oxygen deprivation, delayed C-sections, and preventable brain injury.
