To see more Titanic passenger scandals, enjoy this playlist: • Titanic Scandals In the immediate days after the Titanic sank, there was a frenzy amongst the relatives of its passengers to get information about their loved ones - hoping that ones THEY knew beat the odds and were among the survivors. Incorrect headlines had been printed, reflecting that people who had in fact died were alive. People like John Jacob Astor and Isador and Ida Straus. There was even uncertainty about who had even boarded the ship to begin with. One of those people whose name was surrounded by uncertainty was Benjamin Guggenheim. Several newspapers wrote articles questioning whether he and his wife had booked passage on the Titanic. It turned out that Benjamin did board the Titanic. His wife did not. That might have made the trip rather uncomfortable for his mistress! It’s another Hot Mess History scandal from Ti. Your source for the hottest scandals from 1870 - 1940. Incorrect headlines had been printed, reflecting that people who had in fact died were alive. People like John Jacob Astor and Isador and Ida Straus (check for that headline again). There was even uncertainty about who had even boarded the ship to begin with - as can be seen in this notice that was printed in the Buffalo News on April 16, 1912 that shows that Benjamin Guggenheim’s brother was looking for him. As we know, Benjamin didn't survive, but he helped a lot of women and children get into lifeboats. One of the women that he helped was his French mistress, Leontine Aubart. He had the nerve to buy her 4,000 pounds worth of jewels that went down with the ship. She tried to sue to recover their worth. Now, why was that 4,000 pounds worth of jewels so important? It shouldn’t have been. At least not to a millionaire. And that’s what Benjamin Guggenheim was, right? A millionaire? That’s what all of the newspapers said. That’s how he lived his life. Well, when his wife, Florette, and their daughters got what was left of his money, she said that she felt like a poor relation. Why is that? It’s another Hot Mess History scandal from Ti.
