We watch the parade, the flypasts, the speeches and the rituals that remind us of who we are meant to be as a republic. However, this year was different. While the nation celebrated, Sonam Wangchuk — an engineer, educator, and innovator from Ladakh — remained in preventive detention, with his legal battle stretching on without resolution. Known for his work on educational reforms, climate solutions and sustainable infrastructure in some of India’s harshest regions, Wangchuk was once celebrated as a model citizen. But, all that changed when he began asking political questions. His demand for the implementation of the 6th Schedule in Ladakh and the region’s constitutional protection brought him into conflict with the state. Peaceful protests followed. Then came detention under the National Security Act — without trial, without conviction.
