Hebrews 10:26 is a widely debated and often misunderstood text that is used to teach all kinds of false doctrines. So what exactly is this verse saying? What does it mean to "sin willfully?" It's extremely important that we understand the context of the letter to the Hebrews as a whole, recognizing that the apostle Paul is writing to born again Hebrews/Jews. This text can be compared with Hebrews 6:4-6 regarding falling away. The "sin willfully" of Hebrews 10:26 is the "fall away" of Hebrews 6:6. The whole point of this video series is to give people hope and encouragement in and through Jesus Christ. Continue looking to Jesus and considering Him always. Many people have received condemnation from this passage that has placed them in a state of hopelessness. I want to restore hope to those who think they have "sinned willfully" when they actually haven't. In this video one will see that the context of sinning willfully is in reference to apostasy (specifically born again Jews returning to Judaism). This passage was not written to get born again believers to question their salvation, rather it was a warning to what would happen to those who apostatized in a particular way after letting things slip. Unfortunately many people have taught from this passage that sinning willfully is referring to any random acts of sin that we continue in knowing that it was wrong. I don't feel that interpretation lines up with the context of this passage or of the understanding we get from the rest of Scripture regarding forgiveness and how if we sin that God is faithful to forgive us our sins as long as we repent (confess our sins). There is a difference between being overtaken in a fault as we read about in Galatians 6:1 and the "willful sin" of Hebrews 10:26. We can repent of all acts of sin, but the specific defiant voluntary act of apostasy by reverting to Judaism would be voluntarily placing one's self in a place beyond repentance. After watching this video, one should be able to see that by Jewish Christians reverting back to Judaism, it would be placing themselves among those who crucified Jesus and subjected Him to a public disgrace. One should also be able to see that Hebrews 10:26 begins with "For" which means it is referring to what was just written in the previous verses. The "sin willfully" has to do with forsaking the body of Christ (assembly) by not holding fast the acknowledgment or confession of hope (which is Jesus Christ) without wavering. It is referring to deliberate/willful apostasy. Something done defiantly or presumptuously. Hebrews 10:29 contains very powerful and clear descriptions of why Hebrews 10:26 is referring to someone apostatizing from the faith by reverting back to Judaism. I hope this video helps people who have been deceived by this passage to see this important passage in its proper context so that any guilt, shame, fear, and condemnation that the enemy has used to take away any hope they have in Jesus Christ would be lifted and they will understand that they must be born again and live an empowered life by the Spirit of God.
