Rolling Gun Fight With Armed Robbery Suspect || Oklahoma Trooper Remains Cool As Ice

Oklahoma County District Attorney David Prater has cleared the law enforcement personnel connected to a deadly shootout with a suspect earlier this year. The incident happened on April 2. The Oklahoma Highway Patrol received information from authorities in Arizona that an armed robbery suspect, Charles Carswell III, was believed to be traveling through Oklahoma City on his way to Ohio. Carswell's mother told FOX 25 that her son had stolen watermelon. Troopers saw Carswell's car on I-40 near Counsel Road in Oklahoma City but they said he fled when they tried to pull him over. A lengthy pursuit ensued before ultimately ending after a tactical vehicle intervention was performed by troopers on the Turner Turnpike near Post Road. To that point, Carswell shot multiple times at OHP troopers, almost struck an OCPD motorcycle officer who was on a traffic stop as the pursuit passed him, and put an unknown number of innocent motoring civilians in danger," Prater wrote in a letter clearing the officers. "Carswell had no regard for the lives of law enforcement officers or citizens. Carswell demonstrated an imminent threat to the safety of everyone on the highway that day. He could have seriously injured or killed numerous innocent people." After Carswell's vehicle was disabled, Prater said the 32-year-old left through the driver's door and ran to a rear hatch. "He opened the hatch and began preparing for a gunfight by producing an AK-47 Pistol and two AR platform rifles," Prater said. "One of the AR rifles had a telescopic sight mounted on the top rail. It should be noted that two loaded pistols were later located near the driver’s seat. He used these pistols to shoot at law enforcement during the pursuit." Prater said Carswell began to fire at law enforcement as they attempted to exit their vehicles as the pursuit ended. A barricaded standoff then lasted for several hours. The Turner Turnpike was shut down to protect motorists and bystanders. "During the standoff, gunfire was exchanged between Carswell and law enforcement officers several times. When Carswell presented an imminent threat to the lives of officers, they responded by defending themselves with deadly force," Prater said. Authorities used de-escalation tactics and tried to negotiate with Carswell, Prater said. "Carswell resisted every opportunity for the incident to end peacefully," Prater said. "Until the end, negotiators were offering medical assistance to Carswell and pleading with him to surrender. He refused." Prater said Carswell made one last attempt to shoot officers. "While on the ground after being injured by gunfire, he chose to leap from his prone position and attempt to retrieve his AK-47 pistol. Carswell was able to make it to his weapon, but fortunately, officers who were near carefully positioned armored vehicles were able to deploy deadly force to neutralize Carswell before they could control the weapon," Prater said. "At the time he sustained the multiple gunshot wounds that ultimately killed him, Carswell was again attempting to kill law enforcement officers." Prater expressed no sympathy for Carswell. "Mr. Carswell chose his fate. He chose to die on the Turner Turnpike as he attempted to murder others," Prater said. "All OHP Troopers and Oklahoma City Police Officers are cleared of any wrongdoing related to this incident." Carswell's mother Lisa told FOX 25 earlier this year that he ended up in Oklahoma because he was on a wellness journey. "He was there on a wellness journey, camping and being spiritual," she said. "He had been there for a bit and doing things he liked to do in his last moments." She told FOX 25 that Carswell was a "wonderful son, father, business owner, a master welder and he is dearly missed."
