Eastern Sierra backpacking, Sierra Nevada: Out of Bear Basin to the Hilgard Branch and Lake Italy. Camp at Lake Italy and cross-country hike to Gabbot Pass. John Muir Wilderness - Inyo National Forest. Bishop, California. Eastern Sierra, Sierra Nevada. Trailhead: Pine Creek Trailhead, Bishop August 2024 Itinerary: This video covers the second part of the fourth day and the morning of the fifth day of a seven day backpacking trip from the Pine Creek Trailhead which included the Pine Creek Pass Trail, Pine Lakes, Honeymoon Lake, Chalfant lakes, Granite Park, Italy Pass, ascent to Mt. Julius Ceasar, Dancing Bear Pass, Bear Basin lakes, Vee Lake, White Bear Pass, Hilgard Branch, Lake Italy, Gabbot Pass, Royce Pass, Royce lakes, Granite Park Pass, return to the Pine Creek Trailhead from Granite Park. Day 4: Out of Bear Basin, easy cross-country route to the Lake Italy Trail along side the Hilgard Branch. Lake Italy Trail to the Western shore of Lake Italy. Camp at lake Italy. Day 5: Cross country route alongside the Northern shore of Lake Italy to Toe lake and up to Gabbot Pass. Return to the Lake Italy Camp. All cross-country sections of this part of the trip were easy in regards of navigation and terrain traversed, including the route up and back to Gabbot Pass. With that being said, certainly this itinerary is not for everyone: solid hiking experience, good navigation and route finding skills and great conditioning are a must to complete it without difficulty. Also, it is advisable to support the hike with a GPS enabled hiking phone App or a GPS navigation device providing off-line maps (Or a paper map and compass if you want to go old school). Notes about the map: the map is indicative of the trip itinerary although mileage and moving time cannot be considered as reference as I often deviated from the route for filming and photography; also the moving time on the map includes all stops and beaks during the day as I stop recording only once camp was setup for each day. Hike Notes: The central part of this backpacking trip, out of Bear Basin to Lake Italy and Gabbot Pass, was easy and very enjoyable. The hike along the Hilgard Branch was relatively short and very beautiful with many small waterfalls and water streams. Once I reached the shores of Lake Italy I setup camp and decided for an easy afternoon. The day was hot but I found myself in the shade of Mt. Hilgard pretty soon. The evening and golden hour on Lake Italy were amazing with a superb view of Mt. Julius Ceasar and the Bear Creek Spire across the lake. The cross country hike along the lake and up to Gabbot Pass in the AM was overall easy and very enjoyable as well. The views from the pass are very nice on both sides with a good parade of Sierra mountains including the close proximity to Mt. Dade, Mt. Abbot and Mt.Gabb. The hike down from the pass to Toe Lake and Lake Italy offers great views of Mt. Julius Ceasar and the Bear Creek Spire. Great time in the Sierras.
