By Yulij Ilyashenko Abstract: The main results, and the dramatic history of the theory of limit cycles, including Hilbert 16th problem, will be presentedNote(s) Biographique(s) Ilyashenko Yulij: He obtained his degree in Mathematics from the Moscow State University Department of Mechanics and Mathematics (Mehmat MSU) in 1965, and his PhD in Mathematics in 1969. From 1968 up to now he is a professor of the Mechmat MSU. Since 1994, he has been the Dean of the Higher Colledge of Mathematics of the Independent University of Moscow. He became a member of the Moscow Mathematical Society Bureau in 1993 and he was elected Vice-President in 1996. Since 2000, he was elected President of the Independent University of Moscow .
