At the Medford Bureau of Land Management's (BLM) Boaz timber sale, we find something we see all the time: the logging of "reserved" lands and resources. The Medford BLM exercises a range of loopholes to make the biggest buck off of our public lands—one of which is the "salvage logging" of trees that would otherwise be reserved under other land use allocations. In this case, the logged trees were within the "riparian reserve" mean to be retained for their riparian benefits like filtering water, stabilizing soils in a high-flow area, protecting water temperatures, holding sediment, etc. The BLM doesn't believe in any type of land use allocation other than the harvest land base for the benefit of the timber industry at your expense. If everything is loggable, then nothing is protected and the BLM is not living up to its mission to manage public lands for multiple use—including the health, diversity, and enjoyment of present and future generations.
