Construction of additional, and oftentimes unnecessary, logging roads on public lands is one of the major loopholes the Medford District BLM is taking to log old-growth trees, despite their claims that they cannot and do not log old-growth. Here, in Unit 104 of the Paul's Payoff timber sale in the Last Chance project just outside of Wolf Creek, Oregon, you'll see a right-of-way marked out through the forest. This right-of-way denotes more road construction through this unit which is also conveniently drawn through numerous ancient trees, including an old-growth sugar pine. BLM planners continue to strategically plot new roads through large, old-growth trees that they cannot otherwise log, giving them the opportunity to remove these trees despite the regulations to protect them.
