Welcome to When They Dared to Be Powerful, a podcast series celebrating the legacy of Black women in librarianship. This series centers the contributing authors—and the extraordinary librarians—featured in The Legacy of Black Women in Librarianship, edited by Dr. Nicole A. Cooke. Through their stories, we honor the brilliance, resilience, and leadership of Black women who have shaped—and continue to shape—the profession. Hosted by Dr. Cearra Harris, each episode uplifts the voices behind this important work, exploring their scholarship, their contributions to librarianship, and the lasting impact of the women whose legacies they preserve. In today’s episode, Dr. Harris had the pleasure of speaking with Dr. Anthony Cocciolo, who highlighted the legacy of Alice Roberts in his chapter of The Legacy of Black Women in Librarianship. Dr. Cocciolo is the Dean of the School of Information and has been a member of the faculty since 2009. His research and teaching are in the area of archives and digital preservation, and he is the author of Moving Image and Sound Collections for Archivists (Chicago: Society of American Archivists, 2017). He is currently the Principal Investigator for the Digital Preservation Outreach and Education Network (DPOE-N) project funded by the Mellon Foundation.
