Welcome to When They Dared to Be Powerful, a podcast series celebrating the legacy of Black women in librarianship. This series centers the contributing authors—and the extraordinary librarians—featured in The Legacy of Black Women in Librarianship, edited by Dr. Nicole A. Cooke. Hosted by Dr. Cearra Harris, each episode uplifts the voices behind this important work, exploring their scholarship, their contributions to librarianship, and the lasting impact of the women whose legacies they preserve. In today’s episode, Dr. Harris is joined by Dr. Jason K. Alston, professor of library science at the University of Missouri and contributing author to The Legacy of Black Women in Librarianship. Dr. Alston’s chapter highlights the life and legacy of Dr. Henrietta Mays Smith, a remarkable figure whose contributions continue to resonate within the field. Originally from Soul City, North Carolina, Dr. Alston earned a bachelor’s degree in English from the University of North Carolina at Wilmington, a master’s degree in library science from North Carolina Central University, and a PhD in library and information science from the University of South Carolina. In this conversation, Dr. Alston reflects on their contribution to the book, the importance of documenting Black women’s histories, and the powerful legacy of Dr. Henrietta Mays Smith. *Important Note: Dr. Mays taught at the University of South Florida, not Florida State University. We apologize for any confusion this may have caused. * If you haven’t already, be sure to pick up a copy of The Legacy of Black Women in Librarianship.
