This educational presentation reviews how clinicians can identify and manage alcohol use disorder (AUD) in patients with alcohol-associated liver disease (ALD). Through a real clinical case, the discussion highlights missed opportunities for early detection of risky alcohol use and demonstrates practical screening tools such as AUDIT-C, along with non-invasive liver fibrosis assessments like FIB-4 and transient elastography. The session emphasizes how untreated AUD drives disease progression, cirrhosis complications, hospitalizations, and mortality, while effective treatment can significantly improve liver-related outcomes. This presentation also explores evidence-based pharmacologic therapies for AUD—including acamprosate, naltrexone, baclofen, and gabapentin—along with emerging research on microbiome modulation and metabolic targets. Clinicians will also learn the importance of stigma-free communication, motivational interviewing, and integrated care models that combine hepatology and addiction treatment to improve outcomes for patients with alcohol-associated liver disease.
