Abraham begot Isaac; Isaac begot Jacob; Jacob begot Judah and his brothers; Judah begot Perez and Zerah by Tamar. That’s enough up to there. When we look at Matthew chapter 1, we see a genealogy filled with many names that are hard to pronounce. Likewise, if we look at Luke chapter 3:23-38, we see another genealogy. How many of us have really studied these genealogies seriously? Have we given them importance? Do these genealogies have any special significance? Often, we just skip through them, don’t we? Because it is God’s Word, if we study it carefully, we can gain many insights from it. Yet many times, we find these genealogies boring and just rush through them. Why is this genealogy mentioned in two Gospels? What is the similarity? What is the difference? In Matthew’s Gospel, Matthew establishes the genealogy of Jesus Christ by starting from Abraham. He says, “The genealogy of Jesus Christ, the son of David, the son of Abraham,” and brings it all the way to Jesus Christ. Now, when we come to Luke’s Gospel, Luke begins the genealogy from Adam. Luke starts by saying “Adam, the son of God.” From Abraham to David, both Matthew and Luke record the same genealogy. The names are identical. But from David to Jesus Christ, Matthew’s genealogy and Luke’s genealogy are totally different. There is no similarity at all. How did this happen? Did a mistake occur? Let’s study this carefully. The problem begins from David onward.
