The Core Command (Ephesians 4) The scripture tells us to discard the "old man," which is corrupted by deceitful lusts, and to be renewed in the spirit of our minds. We are to put on the "new man," created in the likeness of God in true righteousness and holiness. There are three key actions here: • Put Off: Like removing old, dirty clothes. • Be Renewed: Changing our mindset according to the Spirit. • Put On: Wearing the new identity God has given us. 2. Why Do We Still Sin? If we are "dead to sin" and crucified with Christ—as St. Paul says, "It is no longer I who live, but Christ lives in me"—why do we still struggle with sin in our thoughts, words, and actions? The speaker uses a powerful analogy: When a loved one passes away and leaves a home, their physical body is gone, but their belongings remain—their toothbrush, their clothes, their photos. Similarly, though our "old man" was crucified with Christ, the old behavior patterns, habits, and addictions are like the leftover "clothes" of that dead man. We sin not because the old man is alive, but because we are still wearing his old clothes. We must consciously "put them off." 3. Hearing the Voice of the Holy Spirit How do we "walk by the Spirit" to mortify the deeds of the body? The Holy Spirit speaks in three ways: 1. In You: A "still, small voice" or a sudden intuition/thought that doesn't come from your own logic. 2. To You: Through the Bible, sermons, other people, or even life circumstances. 3. Through You: When you share the Gospel or speak God's Word, it is the Spirit speaking through you. 5. The Example of Elijah The speaker recalls Elijah waiting for God. God was not in the spectacular wind, the earthquake, or the fire. God was in the "still, small voice" (the gentle whisper).
