This presentation provided an overview of the bereavement support pathway. From the benefits of and barriers to bereavement support to exploring the important questions of when and by whom bereavement support is provided. Also relevant are the resources needed to set up a bereavement support program as well as the resources available in institutions to launch or expand a bereavement support programs. Speaker: Beba Tata-Mbeng, MDiv, MPH, BCC, Manager, Spiritual Care, Mayo Clinic, Jacksonville, FL Beba earned her MDiv at the Jesuit School of Theology in Berkeley, California and a Master of Patient Counseling at Virginia Commonwealth University in Richmond, Virginia. Beba completed CPE residencies from St. Elizabeth Psychiatric Hospital in Washington, DC and at Virginia Commonwealth University. While earning her MPH in Community Health Promotion at the University of Minnesota, Beba explored the religious and non-religious resources that patients with advanced illnesses use to cope. Her research interests include exploring the role of interdisciplinary teams in providing care to patients in crises and recently received a grant from George Washington University through the John Templeton Foundation for a demonstration project based on the Generalist Specialist model of professional spiritual care to improve the Quality of Spiritual Care in Serious and Chronic Illness. In her spare time Beba enjoys dancing, cooking, walking. Respondent: Sarah Byrne-Martelli, DMin BCC-PCHAC Dr. Sarah Byrne-Martelli has served as a Palliative Care and Hospice chaplain as well as a bereavement coordinator since 2002. She is now the Inpatient Chaplain and Bereavement Coordinator for the Massachusetts General Hospital Division of Palliative Care and is on the Faculty of the Harvard Medical School Center for Palliative Care. She holds a Doctor of Ministry from St. Vladimir's Orthodox Theological Seminary and a Master of Divinity from Harvard Divinity School. And she recently published a book from her dissertation work on grief: “Memory Eternal: Living with Grief as Orthodox Christians”. Moderator: Rev. James R. Adams, MDiv, MA, BCC James is currently a Staff Chaplain at Houston Methodist Hospital, and he has professional experience as a palliative care chaplain, bereavement coordinator, and hospice chaplain. He currently is leading the Bereavement Coordination SIG for Transforming Chaplaincy. His hopes is that SIG can be a sounding board for other bereavement coordinators to integrate research into professional practice.
