This is a very old Doll 362 twin cylinder steam engine. The engines are double acting with piston type slide valves.The presence of two cylinders allows the engine to self start at any point in the cycle. All Doll 362s have the following features: pressure gauge, steam control lever , weighted safety valve , boiler feed pump , crosshead guides , whistle, governer, meths(alcohol) burner with flame spreaders, and 4 working oil cups . This is one of the only steam engine models Doll produced that does not carry a second number identification-- like a 364/2 or a 365/1 or 365/3 . That second number tells you which "package" that model engine has. /1 is the most basic and the smallest whereas a /4 would be one of the biggest and have the most features. The Doll 362 was sold with all the trim and fittings of a fancy engine. There are some variations througout the model run . This is engine is a very early example with the blued steel firebox, and the cylinder cocks / oilers . Later models had fireboxes embossed with a brick pattern, a steam jet oiler on the steam line and one on each cylinder. The flywheel and engine mounts and base are cast iron. The cast iron flywheel is quite heavy and measures 5inches in diameter. The cylinders,pistons,rods,valves,valve chests,steam lines, boiler feed pump, and boiler are all brass. The engines have blued steel jackets around them. Many of these brass parts are "finely nickled" as the eary catalogs describe them. The machined parts are beautifully made. Like so many other steam engines built by the "Nuremberg masters "The Doll 362 is a masterwork in precision and artistry. Even though this engine is about 98 years old it still is very powerful and smooth running.
