A lifelong friendship, decades of caregiving, and a heart for her community — meet February Aging Well Award winner Mary Shelton. At 77 years old, Mary continues to serve her neighbors, care for friends through medical challenges, and strengthen her community simply by giving what she says is her greatest gift — her time. In this full interview, Mary and her longtime friend Pauline Mejia share the remarkable story of a friendship that began decades ago when Mary was a single mother working night shifts. Pauline helped care for Mary’s children so they wouldn’t miss important moments growing up. Years later, when Pauline suffered severe injuries and later a stroke, Mary became her devoted caregiver — traveling to be with her, advocating for her medical care, and standing by her side through recovery. Their story is a powerful example of how compassion, community, and lifelong friendship define what it truly means to age well. The Freudenthal Aging Well Award recognizes seniors in our community who continue to inspire others through service, compassion, and active living.
