A man holidaying in Mangawhai says it felt like a freight train as a suspected tornado tore through the coastal village at around 3am Sunday morning, leaving homes destroyed and cars crushed. Downed powerlines also caused outages to nearly 5000 properties, with residents being warned to stay inside in case they were still live. Two people have been hospitalised with serious injuries, with one woman sucked out of her room and thrown onto the roof of a garden shed.
