Transcript: China EV Post is reporting that Nio has received regulatory approval in Sweden to integrate its battery swap stations into the country’s electricity grid, allowing them to provide frequency regulation services. This makes Sweden the second international market, after Denmark, where Nio’s energy infrastructure is now officially supporting the power grid. These swap stations can not only recharge or replace EV batteries in minutes, but now also act as energy storage hubs—helping to stabilize the grid during peak demand and store surplus renewable energy. Nio currently operates 60 of these stations across Europe, with 8 in Sweden and over 3,500 in China. According to Nio, each station approved for grid use can bring in tens of thousands of euros annually—which translates to over $20,000 in extra revenue per site. The company emphasizes that this new grid role doesn’t interfere with their core function of fast battery swaps for drivers. This move marks a major step in Nio’s strategy to position itself as not just a carmaker, but a broader energy service provider.
