January 2026 above Sabden & Cliviger. FrothNinja - A Revival Dedicated to all those recovering from ops, injuries, and illness. A couple of short dusk excursions to start the year. The first was soon after Hogmanay, when much of Britain had a fluffy blanket of snow. We had sheets of ice. The outing was on the moor north of Sabden. The air was like crystal and the cold air meant distant views had a clarity that only comes when the ground is colder than the air. The second was on the high ground south of Burnley. Robin Cross Hill Pottery produced Cliviger Ware, which included the rather striking Agate Ware, still sought after by collectors to this day. The bulk of the material they produced were utilitarian wares, see 2:47, and good quality brick and tile. They also did some fancy commissions too. There are examples of their pots in various collections, including that of nearby Medieval Towneley Hall. Robin Cross Hill Pottery was named for Robin Cross Hill. Robin Cross Hill was named for the Robin Cross, one of a series of wayfaring crosses that went from south east of Mere Clough (Stump Cross) toward Todmorden on a route largely followed by the Long Causeway today. To the best of my knowledge, the last in the line surviving is the best preserved, Mount Cross (aka Idol Cross) near Shore.
