বর্ণিল প্রজাপতি | Colorful Butterflies | **Butterflies of Bangladesh** Colorful Butterflies on Colorful Flowers Butterflies are the most beautiful creations of nature. They are like delicate ornaments adorning nature. Butterflies are the most colorful of all insects in nature. Their unique body, colorful wings, and graceful flight captivate everyone. Watching colorful butterflies brings joy to the heart. Besides beauty, butterflies also play a vital role in maintaining ecological balance. In the 19th century, writer Jagadananda Roy described butterflies with vivid imagery, noting their colorful appearance amidst the green grass and sunlight. That’s why poet Kazi Nazrul Islam admired butterflies, marveling at their brilliantly colored wings in his song “Prajapati Prajapati.” In this song, the poet, with a childlike heart, asks the butterfly about the secret behind its bright red and blue wings. There are about 19,500 species of butterflies worldwide. More than 400 species have been listed in Bangladesh. For such a small country, this number is truly remarkable. The mixed evergreen forests of Sylhet and Chattogram house diverse butterflies. Additionally, the Sundarbans are adorned with countless enchanting butterflies, unmatched in beauty. There are some fascinating facts about butterflies. These exquisite insects taste food through their feet, which contain special receptors. They smell with their proboscis, fly with their wings. Butterflies drink water from mud. In some cases, they can camouflage themselves for self-defense. In our society, there are also myths about butterflies. For example, people say that if a butterfly lands on someone, that person will soon get married. The truth is, butterflies are attracted to the smell of human sweat and blood. Butterflies belong to the order Lepidoptera, a Greek word meaning “scaled wings.” They have six legs, four colorful wings, two antennae, and two compound eyes. Each compound eye is made up of countless tiny eyes, allowing them to see everything around them. The body of a butterfly is divided into three parts: head, thorax, and abdomen. Their wings are covered with countless small scales. These scales are what produce the brilliant colors on a butterfly’s body. The butterfly’s life cycle has four stages: egg, larva (caterpillar), pupa (chrysalis), and adult butterfly. Each stage is unique. Female butterflies lay shiny eggs on leaves, flower buds, stems, and tips of plants. Their lifespan is only 3–4 weeks. Their main diet includes flower nectar, plant sap, and tender young leaves. Butterflies play an important role in our food chain. Like other insects, they assist in pollination. Without pollination, plant reproduction would be disrupted. They also enhance the beauty of the environment. But this ornament of nature, the butterfly, is now on the path to extinction. Due to various reasons, this stunning insect is disappearing. Excessive use of pesticides in agriculture, climate change, the decline of native host plants, and the destruction of natural forests are pushing them towards extinction. Butterflies are a priceless treasure of nature. It is our responsibility to conserve them. By planting flowering plants to create habitats, limiting pesticide use, and keeping the environment pollution-free, we can protect the habitats of butterflies.
