The Orange men's basketball team returned to Sykes Gymnasium for the first time since 2016 and earned a victory over Durham School of the Arts on Wednesday night. Sophomore Carson James scored a career-high eleven points while junior Weston Cheek added ten points as the Panthers defeated the Bulldogs 69-31. The lead changed back-and-forth before Weston Cheek knocked down a 3-pointer early in the first quarter to pull the Panthers ahead for the rest of the game. Cheek drained two 3-pointers. James started running the offense in the fourth quarter and scored all of his points in the second half. This season has been spent with new players playing new roles for Orange following the transfers of Kai Wade and Kamaal Smith. James and Cheek are both in their first season at the varsity level and have shown constant improvement. Against Seaforth on Tuesday night, Cheek came off the bench to score nine points, all from 3-pointers to get the Panthers back within three points in Hillsborough. Cheek is the son of former Orange High pitcher Wayne Cheek, who won a PAC-6 Conference championship with the Panthers in the mid-1990s. Midway through the Big 7 Conference slate, the Panthers are 4-2, only game behind Seaforth and J.F. Webb for first place.
