A three week layoff created by winter weather didn't deter the Cedar Ridge wrestling team from reaching the state quarterfinals in the 5A State Dual Team tournament. On Wednesday night at Cedar Ridge, the Red Wolves defeated Atkins Academic and Technology 47-29 in the opening round. Later in the night, the Red Wolves defeated Currituck County 44-34 to reach the state quarterfinals for the second time in school history. Freshman David Angel earned a technical fall over Atkins Jaxon Gardner 15-0 at 126 pounds to put the Red Wolves ahead 17-3. Later in the night, Angel pinned Adam Newman of Currituck County in 3:02. Angel, who won several Orange Person Athletic Conference championships at Stanback Middle School, improved to 34-14 on the season. Against the Knights, Cedar Ridge senior Carlos Baldwin sewed up the dual match win for the Red Wolves by pinning Koby Hayden at 215 pounds in 1:05. Baldwin earned his eighth win of the year. Cedar Ridge will host the 5A Eastern Regional semifinals, the 5A Eastern Championship match and the 5A State Championship match next week, on either Tuesday or Wednesday. The Red Wolves will face former conference rival Person in the state quarterfinals. In the other Eastern Regional semifinal, top-seeded Croatan will face Montgomery Central.
