ESQUIMALT - The Vancouver Winter Olympics are less than three weeks away and the vast security network is ready. Intelligence officials continue to rate the terrorism threat to the games as fairly low. About 15,000 police, military and private security personnel are responsible for protecting Vancouver and Whistler during the Games. Canada's Navy will deploy about 600 personnel and many of them will come from CFB Esquimalt. In addition, the base will send 3 major warfare ships; HMCS Algonquin, Winnipeg and Calgary and as many as 5 smaller vessels. Exact details on specific unit capabilities are not being released due to operations security. The overall budget for Games security has been budgeted at about $900 million.
