🐣 Hatching ducklings has been an emotional rollercoaster! 🐣 We set 8 eggs in the incubator 25 days ago, and while 2 weren’t fertile, 6 have made it to hatching time! I've done nothing but watched the eggs since the process started and this is my day by day vlog of the full duckling hatch process: The easy ideal hatches, the sweet fluffy ducklings, and the complicated ones that left me guessing. And what I learned about assisted hatching along the way with hours of reading and watching of anything I could find on hatching ducklings! It's all here to help you. 🐣 🐣 THE DUCKLING HATCH PROCESS: Duck eggs typically take 28 days to hatch (Muscovies more like 35 and Khaki Campbells can be shorter). The hatching process happens in stages: first, the internal pip (when the duckling breaks into the air cell), then the external pip (when a small crack appears in the shell), followed by zipping (when the duckling works its way around the shell to break free). This can take 24–48 hours or more, and patience is key! Each stage can have some time between and look like they're stalling but they might not be. Our different ducklings did different things so you'll see some different ways a hatch can look - including some gone wrong. ASSISTED HATCHING: In most cases, ducklings should hatch on their own, but sometimes intervention is necessary. If in doubt it probably just needs time. But sometimes they need help so I'd say make sure you're well prepared and know what to look for if you do down that road. If a duckling externally pips but doesn’t progress after 24 hours, it may be stuck due to humidity issues, incorrect positioning, or exhaustion. Before assisting, check for active movement and chirping. The biggest risk is rupturing blood vessels too soon—if the membrane inside the shell is still full of veins, the duckling isn’t ready. When I assisted hatching it was only when I saw an injury, or when it had been 3+ days from internal pip and there was no progress. Even then I went step by step and stopped if there was any sign of blood. You want to only start assisting in the air sack and go very slowly. I kept cornstarch on hand to quickly apply to any nicked vessel which works well to stop a tiny bleed. HUMIDITY: In this video I took the lid off a number of times, our kitchen is close to the idea hatching humidity. People say 65-75% - we tried to keep it right on 70% humidity. And we dropped the 37.5C incubation temp one degree when we hit 25 days, along with stopping any turning. ✨ Chapters: 00:00 Intro & first hatch 2:19 The easy hatches! 7:50 2 more to go 10:24 Assisted hatch 1 14:57 WHAT is happening? 16:39 Shrink wrapped duckling - Assisted hatch 2 17:43 Ducklins in the brooder Drop any questions in the comments and I'm happy to answer from my experience - which is a lot of reading but not a huge amount of practice so that's where I answer from. 💛 #hatchingducklings #backyardducks #homesteading
