Join me as I ride to Harringworth in Northamptonshire to see a Victorian masterpiece of architectural engineering. Also known as the Welland, or Seaton Viaduct, at 1,275 yards long and with 82 arches, each of which has a 40 foot span, it is the longest masonry viaduct in the United Kingdom. It crosses the River Welland between Harringworth, in Northamptonshire, and Seaton, in Rutland. I take a look around and consider the sheer audacity of the planning. In effect Harringworth became an industrial manufacturing town for the duration of the building operation. A quiet rural community was transformed, as navvies from all over the country were drawn to the area seeking work, many coming with their families. Nevertheless, I entered a tranquil setting on the day of my ride, and the viaduct could be enjoyed as a thing of beauty in its own right. © John Dunn. Motorcycle: Honda CB500F
