A site survey of the haunted building. The Old Birmingham & Midland Eye Hospital. Designed by Payne & Talbot, built in 1883 it finally closed in 1996. In 2000 the building underwent a major refurbishment to turn it into a hotel. This building is haunted, and most of the hauntings appear to have started during the reconstruction : CCTV picked up a grey figure drifting around a certain area of the building, but when security went to investigate there was nobody there. . . . . A group of workers were alarmed to hear cries for help from a room in the basement, but when they investigated the room was empty. However the group of workers themselves became locked in the same room and had to cry for help themselves until they were rescued. . . . . . . Upon the upper floors the Ghost of a Victorian Ward Sister has also been seen wandering the corridors - but she is only visible from the waist up ! Eventually a Priest was brought in and performed an exorcism. This whole area of Birmingham City Centre (which includes The Town Hall, Birmingham Council House, Snow Hill & entire Financial District) is built upon a massive unconsecrated cemetery. This cemetery existed from circa 1000 AD, right up until the building of modern Birmingham in late Victorian times. When this cemetery became full in 1830s/1840s it prompted municipal authorities to create nearby Key Hill & Warstone Cemetery. This cemetery is believed to be the source of the many hauntings and Ghosts which endure. Whether it be Philip Matsell of Snow Hill, John Heap & William Badger of The Town Hall or " The Floating Ghost " of Birmingham City Council House. The many Ghosts of central Birmingham.
