New Years 2026. A marginal weather forecast showed a potential window to climb the dominating figure in the Hopkins Valley, Mt Ward. Our first day was a 10hr tramp up South Elcho stream and a climb into the clouds to reach a wet and windy Elcho Pass. From here we sidled under Mt Baker and Dundas to a high camp on a slither of rock in a world of white. The rain fell throughout the night, until around 4-5am, but then the clouds started to break and provided some hope that we might be able to able to 'give it a poke'. We set off around 8am, descending and climbing steep scree to/from a cirque below the glacier. Clouds dissipated as we moved along a beautiful ridgeline, looking out to Mt Hooker/Dechen and the spectacular Solution Range above the Landsborough Valley. After a short section of glacier travel we found ourselves inside a huge wind lip below the main buttress, after climbing out of this we stood below the rock and considered our next step. The cloud had built all around us, the rock was wet and we were late in the day because of our delayed start! We were about to embark on 150m of low grade alpine trad climbing, we were pretty certain that we wouldn't make the summit so as a group we decided that turning around now, before crossing that line of seriousness was the right call. A disappointing end after a hard slog to get to this point, but, that's the nature of the beast sometimes. As always that famous mountaineering quote rang true in my mind, that "the mountain will always be there, but you might not" a memorable trip with a great crew and a good start to 2026.
