🎥 Welcome to the third episode of Rodney Charters ASC lighting tutorial series, with John ‘Biggles’ Higgins as lighting consultant. Charters is best known for his work as cinematographer on series like 24, Shameless, Magnum P.I., The Last Ship, The Shannara Chronicles and Dallas, plus movies like Going in Style. Higgins is recognised as the pre-eminent gaffer of his generation and best known for his work on 1917, Skyfall, Tommorrow Never Dies, Masters of the Air, Chaplin, Kingsman, Mamma Mia, The Bourne Ultimatum, Children of Men, Charlie and the Chocolate Factory, Harry Potter, Thor: The Dark World and Captain America. 🎬 We learn why it is sometimes important to light a scene for continuity throughout the shoot day. While the natural light in a room may look good at a given time of day, it usually cannot be relied on to remain constant for long enough to complete filming. The scene in this tutorial is a living room where the two characters are at home during the daytime. Instead of the real sun the team used NANLUX Evoke 2400B and Evoke 1200B LED spotlights to emulate warm afternoon sunlight flowing in through the windows. A NANLITE PavoSlim 120C LED panel is used to mimic soft reflections of sunlight on the walls and fill in the light on the characters’ faces. A PavoTube II 30X is used to emulate the changing light from a television as one of the actors plays a game. ⚡️To make the scene appear even more real Charters opened the windows and had drapes, plants and even his hand casting moving shadows over parts of the scene. Whether you’re an experienced filmmaker or just starting out in lighting design, this tutorial will show you how to make the most of NANLUX and NANLITE lights to elevate your storytelling with stunning visuals. 🙌 Huge thanks to the team for this amazing work!
