As much as I love painting spontaneously and without a plan, sometimes it is so much more relaxing to already have a scene in mind. For me, painting spontaneously is where I actually find the most growth, but when I am tired and not feeling very creative (I think many of us feel exhausted this time of the year), having a pre-visualised landscape to work from helps me keep my creative practice going despite the very low motivation levels. I had a sketch that I wanted to explore further, so I created a drawing of a lighthouse and a couple of small gnarly trees, and fell into the comforting process of painting with an actual plan.
