Minehead Train Station stands as a significant landmark at the western end of the West Somerset Railway (WSR), a heritage railway with a rich history. The station's story began in 1874 when the original West Somerset Railway, which initially ran from Taunton to Watchet, was extended to reach the burgeoning seaside resort of Minehead This expansion was driven by the increasing popularity of coastal holidays and the need to serve the growing number of visitors. The original Minehead station was modest, featuring a single platform, a small goods shed, and a yard. As Minehead's popularity as a tourist destination soared in the early 20th century, the station underwent gradual expansion. A bay platform was added, the station building was extended, and the main platform was significantly lengthened in 1933 to accommodate the longer trains bringing holidaymakers. A signal box, engine shed, turntable, and additional sidings were also constructed to manage the increased traffic. However, like many branch lines in Britain, the Minehead branch faced a decline in the mid-20th century. The engine shed was closed in 1956, goods traffic ceased in 1964, and the original signal box became redundant in 1966. The line was eventually closed to passengers by British Rail in January 1971. Yet, this was not the end for Minehead Station or the railway it served. Enthusiasts recognized the historical and tourism potential of the line, and in 1976, the West Somerset Railway was reborn as a heritage railway. Minehead Station became its terminus and headquarters. The old goods shed was ingeniously converted into the railway's main locomotive shed and workshops, preserving a vital part of the station's history. The current signal box at Minehead was relocated from Dunster in 1977, and a turntable was eventually installed in 2008, rescued from a line in North Wales. Today, Minehead Station is a vibrant hub for the WSR, welcoming thousands of visitors each year who come to experience the nostalgic charm of steam and diesel travel through the picturesque Somerset countryside. The station itself has been lovingly maintained and enhanced by volunteers, with features like the traditional bookstall on the platform, adding to its unique character. It stands as a testament to the enduring appeal of railway heritage and the dedication of those who saved and revitalized the West Somerset Railway.
