Have you ever heard of Phenylketonuria (PKU) - A rare metabolic condition diagnosed at birth affecting a person’s ability to metabolise protein, which if left untreated, can lead to devastating neurological complications? This parent speaks about advocacy as a positive coping strategy for PKU; a hugely challenging and commonly misunderstood rare disease. She reflects on gratitude, the controllables and the immense power of hope. Bernadette Sheehan Gilroy is Chairperson of the PKU Association of Ireland (PKUAI), a Lecturer at Munster Technological University Kerry and Researcher at Dublin City University. She is a parent to a child with PKU and she works towards empowering the PKU community by raising awareness, improving health services, and accessing innovative treatments.
