THE WELSH CAVALRY have deployed to the unforgiving Mojave Desert in California to assist a US Brigade in its pre deployment training. 1st The Queen's Dragoon Guards, The Welsh Cavalry, are being trained at The US's National Training Centre (NTC) in South East California. The cumulative size of all the UK's training areas combined, this area is used to train US armoured brigades immediately prior to deployment. Known amongst the British Army as Ex DIAMONDBACK, between 4 Aug 17 - 11 Oct 17, 250 soldiers and 49 vehicles of the QDG battle group will have moved from their barracks in Norfolk to Fort Irwin in California. This will test Light Cavalry reconnaissance interoperability within US Armoured and Stryker Brigades. A long way from the valleys of wales and the border counties, the Mojave desert is a dry dusty area with temperatures of 35 degrees during the day. Manoeuvring through the night and watching from concealed positions during the day, the soldiers of B and C Squadrons will act as the eyes and ears of the almost 3000 people strong awe-inspiring US formations. Training against an active, cunning enemy with few restrictions, this exercise provides an experience close to the reality of war. The QDG are being assisted in getting the most out of this unique training by observer mentors from the nearby British Army Training Unit Suffield, Canada.
