In May 1297 William Wallace exploded on to the Scottish medieval scene by killing William de Hazelrigg, the Sheriff of Lanark. The upper Clyde valley saw the installation of English forts and army posts throughout the country. Lanark was a frontier town and its streets, markets, and ale houses were busy with the occupation of an English garrison. The story of this day is mixed with fact and legend… According to the medieval poet Blind Harry, Wallace was out for bloody revenge for the killing of his woman Marian Braidfute at the hands of Hazelrigg the Sheriff. Another source tells us that a disturbance and fight broke out at Hazelrigg’s county court that day and that Wallace escaped with the help of a woman. He returned later that night to Lanark with a band of men and attacked the Sheriff’s quarters and killed him. Some say he was butchered by Wallace and his head cleaved in two. Q: Was it revenge for murdering his love as legend tells us? Q: Did an incident boil over into a violent act with Wallace returning later to exact revenge? Q: Or was the Wallace attack pre-meditated as part of ongoing organised disturbance against English authority? What are your thoughts? In any case the incident sparked the lowland rebellion of Scots against the English invaders and their authority. Wallace would gather many men to him and ride in open rebellion throughout the land. In June that year he would take part in raids with William Douglas. He would soon join forces with Andrew de Moray from the north and they would lay siege to Dundee. After which the combined forces would travel to Stirling and meet the English army in September the same year for the famous battle of Stirling Bridge. I also look at a crucial eye witness report of the incident by a man under the English garrison who was left for dead. I visited Lanark as a boy many times as a child. The name of Wallace is soaked through the town which literally seeps with his history. I enjoyed making this film immensely and reliving some of my youth. I hope you enjoy viewing it as much as I enjoyed making it. Thank you for your support and walking in the footsteps with me to keep our history alive.
