We're back! I thought I'd post this set of reviews right after the last one ( • New Scotch Distilleries, Lowlands: Lochlea... ) - but alas I got pretty sick towards the end of the week, so they're up today. I've got some Ardnahoe snuck away for another time, it's coming. But today we taste out an offering from an interesting new island distillery and a pair from the more southerly side of the Highlands. It's Harris Distillery out on... well, Harris, which is absolutely tiny (only 230k liters of alcohol a year). And it's Nc'Nean, just across from Tobermory, which is even tinier (100k liters). And also Strathearn, just east of Glenturret, which is possibly the smallest producer in the whole country (30k liters). Let's go: The Hearach "First Fill Oloroso Cask Matured" Isle of Harris Single Malt Scotch Whisky (Isle of Harris Distillery, Tarbert; bottled circa 2024; unchillfiltered, natural color; 46% ABV), 86+/100 Strathearn Distillery 2014 7 Year Old Single Malt Scotch Whisky, Port Cask No. 107 (Methven, bottled by Thompson Bros. Seven Cask Series; distilled 8/7/14, bottled circa 2022, 116 bottles; 52.9% ABV), 87/100 Nc'Nean Cask Strength Organic Single Malt Scotch Whisky (Morven; bottled circa 2023?; 59% ABV), 85⚠️/100 This is an interesting trio, let's start with that. The Hearach, sold in the worst display box of all time, is a fruity, mineraly, maritime, lightly peated kind of style with your standard issue sherry overcoat, and it really works quite well; fans of Highland Park (or the nicer side of Talisker), take note. The Strathearn is a truly delightful surprise, a sort of orangey-grainy Midlander in a port cask that somehow doesn't suck, instead giving the affair a really fun cough syrup touch that works extremely rare. The Nc'Nean, beware, is seriously weird and normal malt people will not like it. Grappa/marc fans might well totally dig it, though, and if you treat it by that standard it almost makes sense...
