The Doctrine of God, also called Theology Proper, is the study of who God is—His existence, nature, attributes, and works—as revealed in Scripture. It is the foundation of Christian theology because every other doctrine (salvation, church, humanity, etc.) flows from the truth about God. Key Elements of the Doctrine of God 1. Existence of God Assumed by Scripture: The Bible begins with “In the beginning, God…” (Genesis 1:1). Philosophical Arguments: Cosmological – everything has a cause, pointing to God. Teleological – design in creation points to a Designer. Ontological – the very concept of God implies His existence. Moral – universal moral law points to a Lawgiver. 2. Nature of God Spirituality: God is spirit, not material (John 4:24). Personality: He is personal, relational, not an impersonal force. Unity: There is one God (Deuteronomy 6:4). Trinity: One God in three Persons—Father, Son, and Holy Spirit. 3. Attributes of God Natural Attributes: Omniscience (all-knowing) Omnipotence (all-powerful) Omnipresence (present everywhere) Eternality (without beginning or end) Moral Attributes: Holiness (perfect purity) Righteousness (justice and fairness) Faithfulness (keeps His promises) Mercy and Love (compassionate and self-giving) 4. Works of God Creator: God made all things (Genesis 1:1). Sustainer: He upholds the universe (Colossians 1:17). Ruler: He governs history and nations (Psalm 115:3). Redeemer: He saves through Jesus Christ (John 3:16). Why It Matters Foundation of Faith: Knowing God rightly prevents false teaching. Worship: Understanding His holiness and love deepens devotion. Life Application: God’s attributes guide Christian ethics and leadership. Hope: His sovereignty assures believers of His plan and promises.
