Nepali Church history is marked by early missionary presence, long suppression, and revival in the modern era. Catholic Capuchin priests first entered the Kathmandu Valley during the Malla period, establishing schools and churches, but after King Prithvi Narayan Shah unified Nepal in 1769, Christianity was banned and believers were expelled. For nearly two centuries, Christians lived in exile, mainly in India, until the fall of the Rana regime in 1951 opened Nepal to outside influence. Mission organizations like the United Mission to Nepal (UMN) and International Nepal Fellowship (INF) began social and medical work, while local believers started small congregations in places like Pokhara and Kathmandu. Despite restrictions during the Panchayat system, underground churches grew steadily, and after the 1990 democracy movement, greater religious freedom allowed Christianity to expand openly. With Nepal declared a secular state in 2006, the church has grown rapidly, especially among marginalized communities, and Nepali Christians have also established diaspora congregations abroad, making the faith a vibrant and fast-growing part of Nepal’s religious landscape.
