What if one day you wake up and find yourself transformed into some sort of monstrous insect? This is the exact situation Gregor found himself in when he awoke one morning. The metamorphosis is a story about Gregor Samsa, his abrupt physical transformation and how that destroys his family, his future and ultimately, his sense of identity. In this essay, I will dive into my personal analysis on one of the major topics I noticed was most prevalent throughout the book: Identity and self-perception. Specifically, loss of identity. This is explored not only in the physical transformation of Gregor himself, but how his family views him because of the transformation. I bring forward the following questions and tackle them in this essay: 1. If a person has the same consciousness yet is in a completely different physical state: Are they still the very same person? Do they still have the same personal identity? 2. If others refuse to acknowledge their new identity, what does this mean for their personal identity? In the case of Gregor, not only does his family refuse to acknowledge this new version of him as Gregor - they outright reject his humanity. What does this mean, for him, then? 3. Finally, the big question: To what extent can the external, material world (physical appearence, societal roles and relationships with others) affect the internal one (perspective, self-concept, identity and emotions)? What is the relationship between those two? I will proceed to explore Gregor's relationship with his new physical appearence - which doesn't really affect him that much - his family's rejection of it, why Gregor struggles so much to let go of his human past or even acknowledging his physical state and how his devotion for his family ultimately leads to his death. timestamps: pause want to read more abt this?: ♡ written version (https://www.patreon.com/posts/loss-of...) ♡ the metamorphosis by franz kafka: https://amzn.to/4hxzeeb ♡ Personal identity and self consciousness by Brian Garrett ♡ Persons and Personal Identity by Amy Kind ♡ Self and Identity by Trenton Merricks ♡ The Early Modern Subject by Udo Thiel music used: ♡ massobeats - lotus ( • massobeats - lotus (royalty free lofi music) ) ♡ massobeats - noon • massobeats - noon (royalty free lofi music) subcount: 1,880!
