If your friend jumped off a cliff, would you? We've all probably heard that question growing up. But with TikTok, it kind of makes you wonder: If your entire feed is doing it, would you follow along? To truly understand herding or herd mentality and what drives it, we need to dive into crowd psychology. This area of study looks at how people’s behavior changes when they’re in a group setting. "The Crowd: A Study of the Popular Mind by Gustave Le Bon" is one of the most well-known and influential books in the field of crowd psychology. It pretty much laid the groundwork for much of the modern understanding of group behavior and mass psychology. In this video, I'll dive into it alongside a couple of other books related to crowd psychology. After that, I dive into the herd mentality. It is often symbolized by the image of a herd of sheep and for a reason. If one sheep does something—whether it’s grazing in a specific area, moving in a certain direction, or even jumping over an obstacle—other sheep are likely to follow. But what are the mechanisms behind herding? Finally, I end the video off with Tiktok. In a new york times article titled: "How tiktok reads your mind" Ben Smith reveals an internal TikTok document that sheds light on the app's algorithm. However, not everyone agrees with the article—particularly "TikTok Doesn't Read Your Mind, It Makes Your Mind" by Tiernan Ray, the author argues that, rather than reading users' thoughts, TikTok's algorithm shapes their behavior through reinforcement of dominant trends and group preferences. Tiktok is really just an example here, the herd mentality is seen in every social media app, in every platform as long as there are people because this is not something that exists because of social media. This is human nature. You, at some point in your life, have been a sheep in the herd. Right now, you might be aswell. time stamps: 00:00 - 01:17 cool intro 01:17 - 01:49 crowd psychology 01:49 - 05:08 the crowd 05:08 - 11:12 characteristics of a crowd 11:12 - 14:21 note!! 14:21 - 15:53 herd mentality 15:53 - 21:56 mechanisms behind herd mentality 21:56 - 29:20 tiktok 29:20 - 31:31 conclusion 31:31 - 33:26 thank you :) sources mentioned: ♡ Le Bon, G.
