Join me on one of the most beautiful high-elevation hikes in all of Arizona — Escudilla Mountain (10,912 ft), the third-highest hikeable peak in the state. This trail is packed with history, wildlife, and breathtaking fall colors… and it delivered one of the most memorable animal encounters I’ve ever had on camera. Escudilla sits at the edge of the Apache–Sitgreaves National Forest and was written about by Aldo Leopold, who reflected on the last grizzly bear ever recorded in Arizona — killed here in the 1930s and memorialized on a wooden plaque near the trail. This wilderness is also a Mexican gray wolf reintroduction zone, and the feeling of hiking through quiet aspens and open burn-scar meadows (from the 2011 Wallow Fire) is unforgettable. I even stumbled upon a fascinating wildlife encounter you’ll see in this video… totally unexpected. The summit ridge reveals panoramic views into New Mexico, a dramatic fire lookout tower, and some of the best early fall color anywhere in the White Mountains. This hike is Part 1 of my new series: The Three Highest Hikeable Peaks in Arizona (Humphreys Peak, Mount Baldy, and Escudilla Mountain) ➡️ Series Intro: • Arizona’s Highest Peaks | Hiking to the To... ➡️ Drive to the Escudilla Trailhead: • Scenic Sunrise Drive to Escudilla Mountain...
